2009-09-03 11:00 am AET

Presenter: Dr. Peter Evans, University of Southern Queensland

Dr. Peter Evans has been teaching online since last century. In the mid 80s he recalls being very excited when 2 out of 200 students had an email address! Peter refers to himself as a “Product champion” for Wimba Classroom, Mahara ePortfolios and Moodle communities. USQ introduced the Wimba Collaboration Suite in 2008 and uses it in combination with Moodle.

In this presentation Peter will:
* examine professional development to support staff using Wimba Classroom in their teaching

* look at ways of orienting students to use Wimba Classroom

* make suggestions for structuring Wimba Classroom activities to make best use of everyone’s time and promote useful interactions

* describe examples of ways in which Wimba Classroom is used at USQ

* show examples of tools for supporting wimba use e.g. a debate timer that can be displayed in the branding frame, and a checklist displayed before every Wimba session

There will be opportunities to ask questions and perhaps end with small group discussions on specific topics in breakout rooms. After all, our use of Wimba Classroom can be both the medium and the message.

We encourage you to login 15 minutes prior to session start to network and catch up with your peers.

At session end:
Time will be available after the session for you to discuss issues with like minded people in breakout rooms. At the end of the session we will put a list of topics on the eBoard and you can write your name under the topic of interest. You can then move to the breakout room. You can move to other rooms but the focus will be on active discussion rather than listening. You can stay as long as necessary – last person out please turn off the lights.
