Here at Wimba we’re often asked that, if in addition to archiving live online classes and meetings in Wimba Classroom, if Wimba Classroom can be used to do lecture capture of in-person classes.  The answer is yes.

I first saw this in action in 2002 when the innovative folks at CSU Chico started doing this.  They’d set up webcam in the physical classroom so students who happened to be logged in remotely (while there were students in the physical room) could follow along while viewing the instructor and students.  And CSU Chico is still doing this today.

Laura Sederberg will likely be giving a presentation about lecture capture in the next few weeks...I’ll keep you posted.

I’m interested in learning about this. We are going to try to do the same thing here at La Salle.

Hi Alicia,
You can feel free to contact CSU Chico’s Laura Sederberg directly at LSederberg@csuchico.edu.  She’ll be happy to share her thoughts with you.

Hi Matt,

I would be interested in this too.  Also, is there any sort of “best practices” guide out there for the different methods of using Wimba (such as all online, mixed in person and online, lecture capture w/ in person students only)?  It would be great to have.

Thanks,
Kyle

I’m not aware of any formal documentation...however...we did write a case study about Chico’s lecture capturing via Wimba.  This case study does a pretty good job of specifically describing its methods.  Here it is: http://www.wimba.com/customers/customer-spotlights/csu_chico_lecture_capture
