I have a special education math teacher asking my advice on some technology and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Here is the question:

“I am going to try to get a grant to get some type of technology that will allow me to do demo’s and things during wimbas. I’m looking for something that’s quite a bit better than a webcam. I need something that I can use on a daily basis so the streaming unit isn’t an option.

I’ve been told that there is something out there that will do what I want, but I don’t know where to begin. Once I find something, I then have to see if it will be compatible in wimba. “

Thanks!

What do other institutions do if a student cannot—for legitimate reasons—connect to the Wimba Classroom on the day of the class? For example, their cable modem provider experiences outages due to an ice storm.

Can you point me to some best practices?

I am a doctoral student who is working on a two part study (casual comparative and true experimental design) exploring how the use of synchronous audio/visual CMC systems such as Wimba, as a complement to asynchronous CMC systems, in online courses enhances or detracts from students’ sense of presence and learning. Results should be released in August 2009.

I am still currently seeking faculty willing and able to assist me in collecting data for my significant and timely dissertation study. Specifically, I am seeking faculty across the country who are teaching online counseling, human service, psychology, social work , or highly related courses (delivered asynchronously or both asynchronously and synchronously) to participate. During the final two to three weeks of their courses, I am asking faculty to take a few minutes to send a participation letter to their students that requests students’ voluntary and anonymous participation in an online survey (about 60 questions). If you know a colleague who would be interested, able, and willing to participate in the casual comparative part of this study in Spring 2009 (16-week; 8-week ;5-week, etc.), please feel free to contact me at amanroc at regent dot edu.

P.S. Someone on this forum asked about research regarding Wimba and blended courses; thus far, in my research, I have found limited studies on this topic. Bonk and Park (2007) and Wang & Chen (2007) have published on similar topics.

It’s been a little slower this summer because a lot of faculty are off. I suspect that as Fall semester approaches I will be busy with getting people trained to use this. I’m excited about a department head who wants to have his instructors trained in Wimba so that they can offer hybrid classes where one day a week they meet live, and one day a week they will meet on Wimba. He plans on doubling the offerings of his department, which will grow more revenue and give people more choices re: class.
