Obama Asks to Extend Unemployment Benefits for Persons Going Back to School

Of all the initiatives that the new administration in Washington DC has put forward the last few months, one that is being considered today just caught my eye. The AP reported that President Obama has asked states to stop the practice of ending unemployment benefits if a person goes back to school. I personally think this is a necessary idea. Like so many of us, I too have been on unemployment and both times I considered going back to school - and both times realized that I wouldn’t be able to afford to if my unemployment benefits were simultaneously discontinued. After all, education doesn’t come cheap, especially for someone who’s out of work and making at most $405/week. Personally speaking, I hope this initiative gets the job.

I have not supported much of what Obama has done of late, but this seems like a no brainer to me!

This is how I look at it. This is a period of time that unemployment is high. People have lost their jobs because companies are cutting back to deal with costs. Extended benefits so you can go to school is wrong. Getting a higher education or training will not help because the problem is LESS JOBS out there. I don’t care which way you try to spin it. Unemployment is strictly to help you provide for yourself and family during a time of job loss. And you can’t compare this to welfare. It’s a necessary evil, because innocent children are involved. If you need welfare go for it, it’s out there for those in dire need. But don’t make an excuse that they should extend unemployment so you can get more training, it’s just not right.

Is there any update to this? I have been on umemployment benefits for a year and a half. I cannot find a job and want training. I cannot afford to loose this benefit in the meantime.

Ok, makes sense. better get qualified than sitting at home turning thumbs. Just wondering who is going to pay for this in the end, as the US seems essentially broke.

Not a very bright idea, as this from a statistic viewpoint masks the real problem for a just a while: not enough jobs.

Makes me laugh when people talk about how you shouldn’t be on unemployment while being in school. These people are generally not employed and not on UI. Try not being able to pay your bills and loosing what you had worked hard for for many years, and on top of that not finding a job while drawing payments even though you HAVE been looking for work. Going back to school for some of us WILL expand our options and be able for us to put food on the table and have a roof over our heads. Going on welfare are you kidding me? You need to walk in the shoes before you open your mouth!

Employees are often unaware of the information they have at their fingertips. They may not fully understand the responsibility that comes with such access. It is important for organizations to educate their employees on control measures, ways to protect the organization and the employee.

I wonder if you can draw unemployment when laid off and but you have already been going to school. Im a full time worker and will be losing my job in May. I have been going to school for almost a year while working. I just want to make sure I can draw unemployment in June and keep going to school.
